A hairy issue: Sailors tell the US Navy, 'We want beards'

Jul 20, 2018

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Now that women in the Navy can wear ponytails, men want beards. The Navy said last week that servicewomen could sport ponytails, lock hairstyles, or ropelike strands, and wider hair buns, reversing a policy that long forbade females from letting their hair down. Servicemen immediately chimed in on social media, asking the Navy if they could grow beards. A sailor's Facebook post with a #WeWantBeards hashtag was shared thousands of times. Beards were banned in 1984. The Navy wanted professional-looking sailors who could wear firefighting masks and breathing apparatuses without interference. The Navy says that's still the...

Ted Williams' Mexican-American heritage explored in PBS film

Jul 20, 2018

ALBQUERQUE, N.M. — Ted Williams is the last major league baseball player to hit over .400. The Boston Red Sox slugger captivated millions with his dazzling swing and towering homers throughout the 1940s and 1950s in competition with New York Yankees hero Joe DiMaggio. But beneath the smiles and happy trots around the bases sat a man consumed with rage. For years, the baseball legend would shun his ethnic heritage and kept his family's past a secret. Only when he'd begin to speak out on behalf of black players would he begin to slowly reveal his connections to his Mexican-American...

With Comcast out, how Disney's empire will look with Fox

Jul 20, 2018

NEW YORK — The Mouse House is getting close to catching the Fox. Comcast's decision Thursday to drop its bid for the bulk of Twenty-First Century Fox means Disney's $71.3 billion offer for Fox is likely to prevail. Fox shareholders vote on the offer on July 27. Meanwhile, Comcast is pursuing Sky, a European pay-TV operator that Fox partially owns. The moves come as the media landscape is shifting dramatically. Cable and telecom companies are acquiring content makers to better compete with the likes of popular streaming services like Netflix and Amazon. Last month, AT&T bought Time Warner, getting the...

Premature baby penguin recovers after parents broke her egg

Jul 20, 2018

LONDON — London Zoo says a premature baby penguin has been nursed back to health after her parents accidentally stepped on her egg and broke it. The zoo says keepers were astonished to find that the female Humboldt penguin chick, nicknamed Rainbow, was still alive inside the broken egg. They rushed the chick to the zoo's clinic, where vets transferred her to an incubation chamber. The chick spent weeks cuddling with a soft toy penguin and was fed what the zoo called "penguin milkshake" — blended fish, vitamins and minerals. Penguin keeper Suzi Hyde said Thursday that the birds typically...

Study: National parks get fewer visits when pollution rises

Jul 20, 2018

DENVER — Visitors appear to be steering clear of some U.S. national parks or cutting visits short because of pollution levels that are comparable to what's found in major cities, according to a study released Wednesday. Researchers at Iowa State and Cornell universities looked at more than two decades of data on ozone pollution at 33 parks — from Shenandoah to Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon and Yosemite. They say visitor numbers dropped almost 2 percent when ozone levels went up even slightly and by at least 8 percent in months with three or more days of high ozone levels compared...
