Lights for Liberty Blacksburg To Protest Inhumane Detention Centers Tonight

We are a coalition of people dedicated to human rights, and the fundamental principle behind a democracy that all human beings have a right to life, liberty, and dignity.

Christiansburg, United States - July 12, 2019 /PressCable/ —

Lights for Liberty: A Nationwide Vigil to End Human Detention Camps now has events scheduled on five continents and in nearly 800 locations worldwide for this Friday night from 7 pm to 9 pm local time.

Beginning at 7 pm on July 12th, advocates, activists, and impacted persons will speak on the issue of detention camps and immigration rights in the United States.

At 9 pm or sundown, around the country and around the world, participants will light candles in a silent vigil for all those held in US detention camps to shine a light on the Trump administration’s horrific policies.

In the three weeks since Lights for Liberty was announced, our aim has been to partner with, center on, and amplify all those impacted by and all those who are front-line advocates for those in US detention camps.

Our host organizations are all small immigration rights organizations that work every day and have been working for years, with those who are directly impacted by this administration’s racist immigration and detention policies.

Lights for Liberty is intended to have an impact that sustains far beyond July 12th. Our aim is for participants and sponsoring organizations to build relationships that help amplify and fund their work, and for attendees to come away with specific calls to action and the knowledge and motivation to carry them out.

Our local chapter has raised $350.00 for RAICES by selling t-shirts (which will continue to be available until the end of the month). All profits from the sales will go to RAICES is a 501(c)(3) non-profit agency which provides free and low-cost legal services to underserved immigrant children, families, and refugees.

Donors suspend funds for Poland's Jewish museum

Jul 19, 2019

WARSAW, Poland — A Jewish association says some private donors to Poland's renowned Jewish history museum have suspended funding out of concerns about the government's failure to renew the term of its director. A special commission in May approved Dariusz Stola for another five-year term, but Culture Minister Piotr Glinski hasn't yet officially reappointed him. Glinski said recently he was still weighing the decision, because Stola had allegedly refused to make the museum available for a conference that was to be dedicated to the late twin of ruling conservative party leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski. The Museum of the History of Polish...

Taste of the Tour: Garlic soup in Toulouse-Lautrec country

Jul 19, 2019

ALBI, France — Terrible timing: Wout van Aert, the Belgian winner of Monday's stage at the Tour de France, just missed the garlic harvest in Lautrec, and he was a few weeks too early for next month's garlic festival. Stage 10 through the golden corn fields of south-central France to Albi brought the Tour within a quick pedal of the garlic-producing village that gave local artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, born in Albi in 1864, part of his surname. Lautrec's pink garlic is famously pungent; it has a Red Label used in France to designate foodstuffs of superior quality. As with...

France trumpets shared European defense on Bastille Day

Jul 19, 2019

PARIS — French President Emmanuel Macron has overseen France's annual Bastille Day celebration, which this year showcases European defense cooperation. Flags of the 10 countries of the European Intervention Initiative, a joint military pact created last year, led Sunday's military parade down the Champs Elysees avenue in Paris. Although the display included over 4,000 armed forces, 69 planes and 39 helicopters, its biggest crowd-pleaser was a man rocketing through the air on a flyboard device — the invention of French former jet-skiing champion Franky Zapata. Tensions in the street remain high in Paris following months of demonstrations by the anti-Macron...

Collectable sneakers on auction at Sotheby's in New York

Jul 19, 2019

NEW YORK — True sneaker heads will get the opportunity to expand their collection as Sotheby's in New York holds its first sneaker auction. These aren't just any old sneakers but 100 of the rarest, most-coveted sneakers around, including the Nike handmade "Moon Shoe" designed by Nike co-founder Bill Bowerman in 1972. Only 12 were made and a pair is expected to fetch as much as $160,000. Another highlight: Two pairs of Nike Mags inspired by "Back to the Future," made to raise money for Parkinson's research. Both models light up and one is self-lacing. The auction also features a...

California exhibit paints Ed Hardy as artist, tattoo pioneer

Jul 19, 2019

SAN FRANCISCO — When people hear the name Ed Hardy, they likely think of the flashy, tiger- and skull-emblazoned clothing that rocketed to popularity in the 2000s, appearing on the likes of Paris Hilton, Britney Spears and cast members from the reality TV show "Jersey Shore." Others recognize Hardy as a trailblazing tattooer whose unique designs were licensed for use on apparel and merchandise, and whose legacy transcends the brand's current notoriety. But few know him as a prolific fine artist. "The clothing was one little blip on his whole career, which was staggering," said Mary Joy Scott, a tattoo...
