Ludo Aequitas, a not for profit organization – with its key platform the promotion of mental health and equality through sport was created to resolve the exact type of conflict which has now erupted between President Trump and the athletes of its national sports.

The anthem, flag, standing with hand over heart are symbols, gestures, that the United States uses, more than most, as symbols of respect, honour and a commitment to its values as a country and a society. There is also the matter of its constitution and the rights to free speech. The problem arises when different individuals attach different meanings to such symbols, depending on their life experiences and politics.

In recent times, sport has been asked and involved itself with a number of bio-psycho-socio-cultural issues. These include motor neurone disease, breast cancer, concussion encephalopathy, mental health, domestic violence and poverty with the aim of promoting awareness, education and change in attitudes and behaviour.

Now it is race relations and law enforcement.

Whether to kneel or to stand? Link arms or not? What are the values being debated?

Ludo Aequitas has a compromise: through the adoption of its “Ludo Creed” – a set of sporting and human values; and “Do The Ludo” – a sporting behaviour that offers an alternative to either standing or kneeling. A neutral venue for all.

Ludo Creed – is the central cognitive component to the Ludo Aequitas initiative. “We, the players representing our chosen sport, do solemnly swear to uphold the Ludo values of equality, respect, honour and fair play at all times, and denounce vilification based on Race, Colour, Sex, Age, Gender, Religion, Disability or Social Status.”

Do The Ludo – is the central behavioural component of the Ludo Aequitas initiative. It is designed to symbolise strength and defiance, pride and compassion. It can be done individually, with the right arm in the air with a clenched fist, and the left arm folded across the heart (or vice versa). Others can join in by placing their left or right arm around the shoulder of the person next to them, and their other arm again folded across the heart. In this way a “LudoLink” chain can be established either realistically or virtually.

President Trump, sports people and athletes, the fans, the owners, are all invited to “Do The Ludo” as a show of unity and mutual respect for their position.

Feb 23, 2018

JACKSON, Miss. — The first time John Lewis traveled to Mississippi in 1961, he was arrested and jailed with other Freedom Riders, black and white, who challenged segregation in a bus station. Lewis, who is African-American, remembers going into a restroom labeled for white men only. A Jackson police officer told him and other young people in the group to leave. They refused. "The next words he said: 'You're under arrest.' And that was my introduction to the state of Mississippi and the city of Jackson," Lewis told The Associated Press on Thursday in a phone interview from Atlanta. After...

Feb 23, 2018

NEW YORK — Subway is shaking up its loyalty rewards program, giving customers the ability to earn $2 discounts instead of free Footlongs. The changes, taking place next month, are part of Subway's attempts to revamp its image, lure people back to its restaurants and fight falling sales. Sales at Subway's U.S. stores fell more than 4 percent in 2017 from the year before, according to food industry tracker Technomic, as it faced increasing competition from other sandwich chains and those selling burgers and fries. Loyalty programs are seen as a way to keep customers returning and spending more. Subway...

Oscars fashion through the years: The great and the puzzling

Feb 23, 2018

NEW YORK — A radiant Grace Kelly glided from her seat, pulling up her long opera gloves, her little evening bag balanced on one arm, as she collected a best actress trophy for "The Country Girl" at the 1955 Academy Awards. She kept her speech short and sweet: "The thrill of this moment keeps me from saying what I really feel. I can only say thank you with all my heart to all who made this possible for me. Thank you." It was a moment that might not have endured without the cool mint satin gown designed for her by...

Walmart to launch new online home shopping experience

Feb 23, 2018

NEW YORK — Bohemian or traditional? Walmart is launching a new online home shopping experience in the coming weeks that will let shoppers discover items based on their style. The move, announced Thursday, is the first glimpse of the company's broader campaign to redesign its site with a focus on fashion and home furnishings. The overhauled website will be launched later this year and will mirror how people shop for different items. While some purchases like groceries are transactional, others like fashion and home furnishings require more discovery. Later this spring, Walmart is rolling out its new Lord & Taylor...
