Ludo Aequitas, a not for profit organization – with its key platform the promotion of mental health and equality through sport was created to resolve the exact type of conflict which has now erupted between President Trump and the athletes of its national sports.

The anthem, flag, standing with hand over heart are symbols, gestures, that the United States uses, more than most, as symbols of respect, honour and a commitment to its values as a country and a society. There is also the matter of its constitution and the rights to free speech. The problem arises when different individuals attach different meanings to such symbols, depending on their life experiences and politics.

In recent times, sport has been asked and involved itself with a number of bio-psycho-socio-cultural issues. These include motor neurone disease, breast cancer, concussion encephalopathy, mental health, domestic violence and poverty with the aim of promoting awareness, education and change in attitudes and behaviour.

Now it is race relations and law enforcement.

Whether to kneel or to stand? Link arms or not? What are the values being debated?

Ludo Aequitas has a compromise: through the adoption of its “Ludo Creed” – a set of sporting and human values; and “Do The Ludo” – a sporting behaviour that offers an alternative to either standing or kneeling. A neutral venue for all.

Ludo Creed – is the central cognitive component to the Ludo Aequitas initiative. “We, the players representing our chosen sport, do solemnly swear to uphold the Ludo values of equality, respect, honour and fair play at all times, and denounce vilification based on Race, Colour, Sex, Age, Gender, Religion, Disability or Social Status.”

Do The Ludo – is the central behavioural component of the Ludo Aequitas initiative. It is designed to symbolise strength and defiance, pride and compassion. It can be done individually, with the right arm in the air with a clenched fist, and the left arm folded across the heart (or vice versa). Others can join in by placing their left or right arm around the shoulder of the person next to them, and their other arm again folded across the heart. In this way a “LudoLink” chain can be established either realistically or virtually.

President Trump, sports people and athletes, the fans, the owners, are all invited to “Do The Ludo” as a show of unity and mutual respect for their position.

Ash falls like snow as celebrities flee California community

Dec 11, 2017

LOS ANGELES — Ash fell like snow and heavy smoke had residents gasping for air Monday as a huge Southern California wildfire exploded in size, becoming the fifth largest in state history and driving celebrities from a wealthy hillside enclave. Tens of thousands have fled their homes as flames churn through foothill towns near Santa Barbara, the latest flare-up after a week of wind-fanned wildfires throughout the region. With acrid smoke thick in the air, even residents not under evacuation orders took the chance to leave, fearing another shutdown of a key coastal highway that was closed intermittently last week....

Mario Batali steps down after sexual misconduct allegations

Dec 11, 2017

Celebrity chef Mario Batali stepped away from his restaurant empire and cooking show "The Chew" on Monday as he said that reports of sexual misconduct "match up" to his behavior. Food news website Eater New York published an article Monday that said four women accused the chef of inappropriate touching. One of the women said that Batali groped her chest after wine spilled on her shirt. Another said he grabbed her from behind and held her tightly against his body. Eater said the four women, three of whom worked for Batali, asked to remain anonymous for fear of retaliation. The...

Los Angeles subway work uncovers array of Ice Age fossils

Dec 11, 2017

LOS ANGELES — As part of the crew digging a subway extension under the streets of Los Angeles, Ashley Leger always keeps her safety gear close by. When her phone buzzes, she quickly dons a neon vest, hard hat and goggles before climbing deep down into a massive construction site beneath a boulevard east of downtown. Earth-movers are diverted, and Leger gets on her hands and knees and gently brushes the dirt from a spot pointed out by a member of her team. Her heart beats faster because there's a chance she'll uncover what she calls "the big find." Leger...

Tribes: Monument co-management proposal is slap in the face

Dec 11, 2017

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — President Donald Trump's decision to drastically reduce and break up a national monument in Utah wasn't the only blow Native American tribes say they were dealt last week. The president's proclamation on Bears Ears National Monument also contained a little-known plan that changes the makeup of a tribal advisory commission for the remote monument filled with canyons, plateaus, rivers and rust-colored rock formations. It adds a county commissioner who is among the minority of Navajos to support Republicans in peeling back protections for the land. The new commissioner will have the same authority as the group's five...
