The Triumph of Public Opinion: overseas Chinese communities have voiced their support for ending violence and chaos in Hong Kong

Hong Kong, China, has attracted the attention of people all over the world due to the continuous unrest since June 2019. Of course, overseas Chinese scattered around the world care most about this issue. At the beginning of 2020, the public opinion has been fully reflected.

On December 30, 2019, the overseas Chinese community in Florence, Italy issued a joint statement, strongly condemning the rioters in Hong Kong. We firmly support the police and judicial organs of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in enforcing the law strictly, severely punishing rioters, quelling riots and restoring peace and stability in Hong Kong.

On December 29, the overseas Chinese community in Canada also issued a solemn statement, strongly condemning violent criminals for trampling on the principle of “one country, two systems”, undermining Hong Kong’s prosperity and stability, and supporting the Hong Kong police to stop violence, crack down on riots and restore social order in accordance with the law. We resolutely safeguard the peaceful reunification and territorial integrity of the motherland, and call on everyone to work together to maintain the prosperity and stability of Hong Kong.

Similar campaigns are being launched frequently: Australian Chinese associations issued a joint statement against illegal acts that undermine Hong Kong’s basic order, Canadian Ottawa Chinese Associations launched a global signature campaign for overseas Chinese in support of Hong Kong police, 14 Hungarian overseas Chinese associations issued a joint statement condemning the radical violence in Hong Kong, members of The European United Chinese Associations, and China Council for the Promotion of Peaceful National Reunification in Europe went to Hong Kong from 28 European countries to pay tribute to the Hong Kong police and support the police force to stop riots……

After the continuous chaos in Hong Kong, overseas Chinese groups have voiced their support for the cessation of violence and turmoil in Hong Kong. It is both concern for the situation in Hong Kong and keen expectation for its prosperity and stability.

Indeed, the continued aggressive demonstrations have done serious damages to Hong Kong’s prosperity and stability, dragging its economy into an undeserved recession. In November 2019, the Office of the Economic Adviser of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government announced that it would lower Hong Kong’s economic growth forecast for 2019 to -1.3%. This is the second time that Hong Kong has lowered its economic growth forecast during the year, and the first time that Hong Kong has experienced negative annual economic growth since 2009. The economic contraction and loss of confidence caused by the riots have damaged Hong Kong’s economy, which can only bring more confrontations. Therefore, more and more Chinese, including Hong Kong people, have realized that “only stopping violence and preventing chaos can bring Hong Kong to a bright future!”

It is also the common aspiration of people all over the world to maintain global prosperity and stable development in the context of economic globalization. Economic prosperity and stability are the basic conditions for people’s well-being in one country or one region.

In the early hours of January 8, 2020 (local time), Iran launched a missile to attack on the US military base in Iraq. In a few hours, a Boeing 737 flying from Tehran to Kiev, Ukraine, crashed shortly after takeoff, killing all 176 people on board. Behind the “unintentional” shooting down of the Ukrainian passenger plane is the pain of ordinary people. The unrest always hurts only the common people. The rising tide of illegal assembly and violence harms the core values and competitiveness of cities and countries, as well as the interests and well-being of the people.

It is the will of the people to safeguard world prosperity and stability at all times. The behavior of overseas Chinese also shows once again that we firmly support the efforts of Hong Kong Police Force to safeguard the interests of Hong Kong people, and let us see the triumph of public opinion!

Innovative fashion designers lead the way on sustainability

Sep 19, 2020

LONDON — Innovative fashion designers are turning to such things as horseradish and nettles to make sustainable clothing and accessories to the delight of a growing number of buyers. While more consumers are paying closer attention to how the production of goods impacts the environment, old habits die hard. A buy-and-toss mentality persists despite a boost from celebrities helping to drive the upcycle and vintage movements. Actress Maggie Q, who created an activewear line from recycled fabrics, is among activists who see plenty of room for improvement. She says she feels "sick about fast fashion.'' "You hear people say, 'Well,...

Tiger quadruplets in Berlin zoo treated for knee problems

Sep 19, 2020

BERLIN — A Berlin zoo says four young Sumatran tigers are undergoing treatment for knee problems. The quadruplets were born in the summer of 2018 and as they started to develop, zookeepers noticed abnormalities in the way the cubs ran, the Tierpark Berlin said Wednesday. CT scans revealed all four tigers had knee misalignments that were causing cartilage damage. That damage is now being treated, and an expert team is to sit down in the new year to discuss long-term strategies to help the tigers. “We don't want to just rely on our own judgement. We will sit down with...

Streep, Miranda and Stone are named as Met Gala co-0chairs

Sep 19, 2020

NEW YORK — Next year's Met Gala may be the closest we'll ever come to getting a Miranda Priestly moment at the starry event. Meryl Streep has been named as a co-chair of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute. The Oscar-winner played Priestly, a thinly veiled fictional version of Vogue editor Anna Wintour, in the movie "The Devil Wears Prada." Wintour clearly has no hard feelings because she selected Streep as a co-chair along with Lin-Manuel Miranda and fellow Oscar-winner Emma Stone. Designer Nicolas Ghesquiere rounds out the group. The gala's theme is "About Time: Fashion and Duration," which...

Try something new with uncommonly delicious (and ugly) fruit

Sep 19, 2020

As I savor one of my just-picked American persimmons (Diospyros virginiana), I'm reminded how this fruit — and a few other delectable fruits — would never sell. Why not? Because they're ugly! Although the persimmons hung from the branches as handsome, plump, orange orbs up to a few weeks ago, by now they have shriveled and their skins are darkening to brown and black. The texture and flavor have likewise changed. They once were like dried apricots that have been plumped up in water and then dipped in honey with a dash of spice. Now, they've become mushier, with some...

Millennial Money: Secrets of a Black Friday Shopper

Sep 19, 2020

My husband and I have a Thanksgiving routine. Before the family arrives or the turkey is carved, we gather in the living room. As Christmas music plays in the background, he turns on his laptop, and I mine. That's when the deal hunt begins. Some people cringe at the thought of shopping on Thanksgiving or Black Friday, but I revel in it. Maybe it's because I love a good bargain, or because I write about how to save money. Whatever the reason, I know a lot about Black Friday. And I'd like to share some secrets with you. SHOPPING EARLY...
